Nothing beats learning by doing … unless that doing is downright frightening. Queasy stomachs are a natural response to dissection projects. And for learners with ACEs (“Adverse Childhood Experiences,” aka, early trauma), the commonly innate aversion to lab dissection can be far more advanced.
STEAM Powered Family has a great list of resources that let learners experience the unparalleled PBL of dissection without the mess or upset.
Here’s a triple-shot of tools on empathy, aggression & coaching.
Dr. Laura Markham has a great article on “When Empathy Doesn’t ‘Work’”——clarifying the real purpose of empathizing with an upset child: not as a means of controlling or managing the child’s emotional response, but as a way to help them process the emotion on their own.
While you’re at her site, you may also want to check out Dr. Laura’s piece on coaching siblings to handle aggression. Specifically, it helps older sibs handle aggression from their toddler & younger siblings without more, stronger aggression of their own. (You won’t be surprised to learn that Step 3 involves empathy!)
Susan Stiffelman, MFT, is group coaching parents & kids of all ages (even teens!) on how to handle childhood aggression in a variety of scenarios. Her class is in early March & has a scholarship option available.
You can also take this Coaching Eligibility Quiz from the Coach Kiki website to see if you & your family are ready for more personalized & affordable coaching.
