We Build Better Humans, Issue #9 - FALL FEELS
This issue features: 1. Blueprints to surviving fall feels || 2. Tools of the Trade: Paul Ekman's class on micro-expressions || 3. The Atlas of Emotions
A lot of people love fall. But—love it, like it or ‘leaf’ it (see what I did there?)—an estimated 10 million Americans struggle through seasonal affective disorder, aka SAD. (Stats from Boston University, 2019.) Changes in weather patterns, sunlight, vitamin D, melatonin & more all contribute to this. (It can even happen in summer!) This issue honors all the fall feels with a deep dive into the Ekman Library.
Educators & professionals will learn so much about how we feel with these tools Dr. Paul Ekman has spent decades studying in academic settings & even via mood-tracking apps. (Yours truly was once a beta tester. Such a fun project!)
The outcomes measured have become the basis for how interrogators learn if a suspect is really lying; fodder for the former TV show “Lie to Me”; an online learning tool that can teach you to spot what others are really thinking with their “micro-expressions”; & even the research detail to family-favorite, Pixar’s “Inside Out”—the original SEL* movie.
(*That’s social-emotional learning. It’s hot!)
My absolute mega-favorite Ekman tool is the one he & his daughter Eve created together: a comprehensive & interactive map of human emotions that illustrates in beautiful SEL colors how & why we feel, & exactly how we can both learn from & healthily process our emotions. It’s SEL training extraordinaire that’s even blessed by the Dalai Lama!
