Features:
1. Cards for resilient, sacred seasons (all year!) 2. Tools of the Trade: NOAA’s data-in-the-classroom climate activities 3. Mindfulness & self-care resources + BONUS - Martial Arts for Trauma
In the spirit of back-to-school, this week’s focus is on the 3 R’s … of mindfulness. Let’s call them “reading, ‘rithematic & readiness,” because you’ll find something here to read, something with data & statistics, & even something to help you get emotionally ready for whatever life has in store this next season.
There’s a bonus, too, for movement (“rhythm"?): Martial Arts geared specifically for trauma recovery.
Not a teacher, parent or child? Never fear! Our social-emotional tools are good for emotional processing at every age & level. Jump to the ⭐️starred items⭐️ to explore grownup tools for work & home. Sign up for our monthly Work Mood version for more.
In addition to the Talking Points Cards on resilience for kids, Substack writer Kayla Craig of the newsletter Liturgies for Parents is offering her own brand of family conversation cards——as part of her thank-you gift care package to pre-orderers of her forthcoming book Every Season Sacred. Note that both of these makers skew toward a Christian viewpoint. Their conversation starters also have wide applications for many Big Talks. (⭐️Check out the grownup card renditions at both these sites.⭐️)
NOAA (the National Association of Oceanic & Atmospheric Administration) has a wide number of lesson plans——a.k.a. “Data in the Classroom”——on topics like Ocean Acidification, Water Quality, Sea Level, El Niño & more. They include experiments, graphs & other means of sharing & learning the statistics around these topics as part of ongoing conversations.
Every Star is Different is a Montessori-inspired, sometimes-free resource warehouse for homeschool & classroom tools——that can also be used for education supplements. For example: These mindfulness & self-care 3-part cards act as prompts in the moment OR as proactive practice to learn new SEL tools. (You may or may not already know that “SEL” stands for “social-emotional learning,” the newer curriculum around what exactly our feelings mean, what they can teach us, & how we can manage them by accepting them.)
Bonus: Martial Arts for Trauma Healing
Rewire Trauma Therapy is offering a special program——at 50% off for a limited time (use code “HEALINGJOURNEY”)——to help move what it accurately calls the “deeply personal & multifaceted experience” of trauma out of the body through movement therapy. Rewire has used yoga, dance & other modalities to this same end with success. The newest martial arts program focuses on allowing students to:
safely harness & express anger & rage
acknowledge & integrate personal boundaries
alleviate anxiety & emotional distress
& more.
