Q: What is your mental model for social-emotional learning?
I heard Dr. Tim Shriver ask that question of CASEL president Dr. Aaliyah A. Samuel——& all of us present at the Collaborative for Academic, Social & Emotional Learning State-of-the-Field Address around the country on Zoom this week.
Drs. Tim & Aaliyah shared a critical insight for the SEL field that’s near & dear to my heart: Basically, that we are all mood noobs.
What they, in fact, said was that it’s time to start focusing on adult SEL education; that we need more “Learners as Leaders”; & that CASEL’s major focus in 2023 is supporting adult role models in social-emotional learning for a systemic shift, both in the classroom & on the homefront. You’ll find even more details about their stats & insights from that address as bonus content to today’s special issue below.
Dr. Becky of Good Inside has an upcoming workshop with Substack’s own Alex Elle (pictured below). In addition to the Feb. 1 Good Inside community workshop on THE TALK for families, there’s an added one slated for Feb. 22 featuring Alex Elle——New York Times bestselling author, breathwork coach, restorative writing teacher & creator of Gratitude Journal here on Substack——titled “How We Heal: Reparenting.”
Whether you’re familiar with the concept of reparenting or just intrigued, there is sure to be a lot to learn (& practice!).
BP Hope Magazine, the DBSA (Depression Bipolar Support Alliance) resource, has another important article that I just have to share.
In The Power of Anger: Turning Your Negative Emotions into Positive Action, writer Robin L. Flanigan lays out some alternatives to suppressing emotion with unwanted consequences. Here’s a snippet:
“Getting comfortable with anger doesn’t mean that you are allowing yourself to get out of control or have cart blanche for your behaviors,” says licensed social worker Tonya McDaniel. “It means that rather than trying to avoid anger or getting rid of it immediately, you should embrace it and channel it in productive ways.”
Meditation teacher Artie Wu is offering another international retreat, this time in Bali. As a past attendee, I can personally recommend these retreat settings as sacred space for healing with full presence. You can learn more about Artie’s online programs, too.

Not only did the founders of CASEL conceive of social-emotional curriculum in the U.S., they have researched & documented the outcomes, plus lobbied for systemic inclusion both school-wide & for parents & families. So, whether you’re a parent, an educator or both, here are some high points & takeaways, as well as shared resource/research links ….
Deep listening is the foundation of this curriculum. It’s a critical skill to develop & employ across the country (& the globe!) right now.
According to Pew Research & other stats, American parents by & large want the skills that SEL teaches: The top two are confidence/self-esteem & communication.
SEL skill sets = better employability later in life.
The reality is that teachers have always had to teach students how to self-regulate in the classroom, just as have parents at home & in society. A standardized SEL curriculum helps guide this work.
