☀️ ❤️ ☀️

Summer is about splashing, SQUISHING sensory fun. From diving into your favorite pool, splashing around those rainy mud puddles to even sliding down the DIY slip’n’slide-like tunnel of your most recent recipe of rainbow slime, you can count on the dog days of summer to be MESSY!

Play it out (& then wash it out)

Momfluencer Beth Gorden of 123Homeschool4me has a whole host of Playdoh activities to choose from for all ages (especially young children). From color-matching mats to math, reading & themed unit study themes to dozens of different homemade recipes (scented, hot chocolate, funfetti & more!) there’s so much sensory-based learning available. Not a fan of all those Playdoh crumbs? Follow-up the fun with her STEAM hand washing experiment.

Sensing (emotional) sensitivity

Dr Ahmet
of Heartful Parenting has an excellent issue dedicated to the details of Positive Discipline. This parenting discipline can translate to the classroom, too. Just substitute “class” for “family.” The concepts are the same!

Dr. Ahmet has also recently shared about the framework for repairing after losing your cool with your kids:

  • Model Responsibility: Saying "I'm sorry for yelling" shows your child that you recognize the impact of your actions.

  • Imperfect Yet Loving: Emphasize that despite imperfections, love remains constant.

  • Encourage Openness: Foster an atmosphere where expressing emotions and admitting faults feels safe and supported.

Taking it outside (thanks, Tinkergarten!)

Tinkergarten is leaving a lasting legacy. Yes, it’s true: They are closing down the play-based learning outdoor group classes that they have offered for 12 years. Luckily, Highlights for Kids has picked up their blog & will continue to offer the outdoor lessons for groups to use on their own. Check out the full catalog!
