Raise your hand if you’ve ever said yes to a holiday event, volunteer commitment, work request or ask from a family member that you reeeeeeally wanted to turn down, but didn’t. 🙋🏻♀️🙋🏽♀️🙋🏼🤦🏾♂️
Saying no can be a challenge at any age. And saying yes feels easier to navigate with some guard rails: When both parties set realistic expectations, we can eliminate at least some of the anxiety through the process.
This week’s resource share includes guard rails for all parties. 🎉
Big Life Journal’s tools to help teens say NO
Alexandra from Big Life Journal, who writes their weekly parenting resource email, shared an interesting anecdote this week: She watched a teen girl enter a gelato shop with friends, order a dish that was NOT CHOCOLATE (unlike her friends) … & then quickly change her order when a couple of the friends “looked surprised” at her choice. ‼️
It got Alexandra thinking about how teens like this girl might respond to more serious scenarios.
To counter, BLJ shared these visual aids 👆 to help teach novel ways to say no. (Raise your hand if you think you may use these yourself!)
Cool new ways to cultivate a wise heart
Where does the wisdom of discernment live? Is it the mind, the heart, the alignment of both …? Some would argue it’s exactly that (what we call “knowing in the gut”). And some can teach others ways to tap into that aligned wisdom.
If you’re a fan of Dr. Daniel Siegel like I am, you love the freebies & teasers you can find of his online——including those available right now at MindsightInstitute.com. There’s a sample lecture co-presented with mindfulness teacher Jack Kornfield.
Guiding the gifted
Are you pretty well practiced at saying no & setting boundaries well? Perhaps you’re good at speaking up for others. If that’s the case——or if you have a heart for those in the gifted community (maybe that’s also you!)——you may be eligible for the latest training from SENG, the group that’s all about Supporting the Emotional Needs of the Gifted. (Hey, it’s right in the name!) This online training to be a community support facilitator is a one-day event happening April 27.
