February is the longest-going, shortest month on the calendar. To pass the time (wisely), in the U.S., we’ve created a month of holidays.
Ask yourself, “Do the holidays & activities I celebrate in February add value or distract me from unpleasant feelings?”
Chances are, it’s a little of both.
February U.S. holidays include:
Black History Month
Valentine’s Day
Groundhog Day
President’s Day
Mardi Gras
And then there are some crazy-quirky ones, celebrated (ostensibly!) around the world, featuring the glories of love, friendship, families, service & other similar themes that——like every major holiday——are specifically planted in the annual calendar to help us emotionally survive as a people. In a time of seasonal darkness following winter celebrations of candle glow, times historically the thinnest for food & survival, it makes sense to turn to deeper versions of connection in our personal & communal relationships.
Next month, btw, we’ll dive deep into this month as NATIONAL PARENT LEADERSHIP MONTH.
If you’re looking for the traditional February themes for part of your home or class lessons——or for some fun extracurricular bonding——check this out: Inspire the Mom has timely lessons & free printables on winter animals, Groundhog Day & the parable of The Good Samaritan just in time for Valentine’s Day——when you’re sure to want some stories on living in loving respect of self & others.
For science-based/STEM or STEAM activities & lessons, consider this your invitation to a link party on soooo many ideas: Visit/subscribe to STEAM Powered Family or just check out this Valentine’s link party page in particular.
As a prelude to parenting power, please allow me to introduce you (if you don’t already know her) to Avital Schreiber Levy, a parenting coach who’s taken her design background & used it to help families all over the world intentionally design the best lives for their fams——from their home spaces to targeted play/creative/movement zones to the creation of family culture maps that embrace each member’s loves, passions & life goals. Her latest podcast, Hi, Fam!, has tons of tips & invitations to learn more.
It’s true: I actually have two book chapters coming out in the next several weeks, likely right around the same time. Stay tuned for even more——about Family Power & Overcoming Imposter Syndrome. (And discounts for subscribers!)
